A Brief History

Around 1968-69, a group of young, educated, enthusiastic, and hardworking women envisioned an organization that would unite women from all walks of life – literate and illiterate, rich and poor, rural and urban. Dr.Kusumtai Ghanekar,a yong doctor with the strong foundation of the values and thoughts of Rashtr Sewika Samiti ,flead this group.Kamaltai Jog was the main contributor amongt all co-workers. This vision coincided with the centenary of Sister Nivedita‘s birth in 1967. The group found inspiration in Sister Nivedita (born Margaret Noble), an Irish teacher who dedicated her life to India’s freedom struggle and the upliftment of Indian women.
Sister Nivedita, unlike revered figures like Sita, Draupadi, or Rani Lakshmibai, was a commoner. Yet, she left a remarkable legacy. She established the first school for girls in India, played a key role in the freedom movement, and assisted Yogi Aurobindo and Annie Besant. Nivedita championed the cause of women’s emancipation and actively worked towards empowering them through education and training. Her motto, “Work, work, and work,” resonated deeply with the founders.
Inspired by Sister Nivedita’s dedication, these women established Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan in Sangli, their place of residence. The institution’s core objectives are:
- To organize various social, economic, educational, and health activities for the overall development of women and children.
- To empower women to become self-sufficient.
Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan has relentlessly pursued these objectives. It has flourished in scope and vitality, offering opportunities for education, skill development, and support to navigate organizational challenges. The institution has embraced uphill tasks with unwavering spirit and commitment. It utilizes its resources and wisdom to the fullest to help women recognize their potential and play their rightful role in shaping their homes, society, and the nation, both present and future.
